Description Of The Ragdoll Breed Of Cat
The Ragdoll breed is a Registered, Pedigree papered
cat, ALWAYS and ONLY BLUE EYES and POINTED, described by a "Ragdoll
Breed Standard" in Registry Associations. All Catillac Cats
Ragdolls and their foundation breeding stock from other catteries
are registered and pedigreed in the "CFA" (The Cat Fancier's
Association). When you are looking for a "Purebred Pedigreed, Registered" pet, you can feel good knowing there are breed standards set that include personality, type, build, coat, eyes, head shape, etc, colors and patterns. |
Ragdoll Personality Profile The Ragdoll is extremely docile, is to possess a genial good nature and is irresistibly huggable. They are to have an exceptionally gentle, well-balanced temperament. Each does have it's own personality though. They are not to display the independence and aloofness a lot of cats are generally known for. They want to be where you are and will follow you everywhere, and will either want to be near you or in your lap. They are a personality cat, intelligent, playful and affectionate and usually not loners at all. They develop their "flop" or "raging out" or laying flat on their back with all fours laid open, over time and depending on how they are handled and treated. Some do not possess this trait. Some are more shy and some are more active, and this is why caring breeders/catteries will try their best to see that you get the "type" to fit you and/or your family. Most are very quiet in the voice and meow very little and some will coo like a dove or chirp to speak to you or other pets. |
Ragdoll Building Regulations
The Ragdoll is to be a large, long-bodied, handsome cat with a semi-long, silken
type coat and lovely, oval shaped blue eyes. Neutered adult males can reach 15-20 pounds and more, females will weigh about 5 pounds less. Their undercoat if any, is not profuse as in some other long-haired breeds, is not to mat and shedding is
not to be in clumps, and is known to be less especially when household temps
are kept on the cooler side. The Ragdoll is slow to mature, taking 3-4 years and to fully mature in weight and size. Their color and pattern
is generally fully mature at 2 yrs in age.
Ragdolls are Blue-Eyed
Pointed cats
only (pointed means the points of the cat are colored
darker than the body). Ragdolls are one of the largest domestic cat breeds, known as
gentle giants who are large boned & heavy, who love to be with and
interact with
humans. Ragdolls are NOT to be
fat. Pedigreed
Ragdolls have medium-long fur that is luxurious to touch like a Rabbit and hard
to keep your hands off. They are Exceptionally friendly, follow
humans from room-to-room preferring to be with you, on you, next to you,
sleep with you, and they're extremely curious and intelligent. Owners of Ragdolls are
captivated by the large size, rabbit feel coat, and big oval blue eyes
of this sweet gentle, strictly indoor only feline. Known to thrive BEST
in the company of their humans and a buddy pet if they're humans are
gone every day, Ragdolls seem to do best not being left alone for long
periods every day. However, each is an individual and some retired breeding
Ragdolls, and individuals, do best being the only king or queen pet in a
home. This is the exception to the rule though and reputable breeders
can tell you all about each individual Ragdoll they have. Ragdolls are never declawed and
do not require heavy discipline or yelling at ever. They have a
soft melodic or
chirping type voice and use it on occasion, not known to be
talker's or yeowlers.
Of Importance:
Selecting breeding cats is always a balance, because there is no perfect
example of the breed and each prospect is going to have some flaw. All
of the breed characteristics are important and all need to be taken into
account. Each breeding program has its own things to avoid, whether
asymmetries in markings or eye shape or legs. Each of us has particular
big attractions, whether eye color, great contrast or size. However,
when making fine distinctions among very good kittens, selecting based
on health and temperament first is wise and productive. One important
factor is to not repeat weaknesses in both sexes of breeding cats.
Often, the right breeding pair can overcome each other's weaknesses if
they are not present in both parents. It can take years for a breeding
program to reach levels and goals set by cattery owners. |

Patterns & Colors Of Ragdolls
Per The CFA Association Breed Standard
http://cfa.org/breeds/standards/ragdoll.html
(Pointed areas on any cat
are the face, head, ears, legs, feet, the lynx stripes can cause darker
colors to appear lighter in color) |
| |
|
“Colorpoint” below has dark points and the body color is a lighter
complimenting shade to the point color. Markings of color are
like what you see on a Siamese breed. Example of young Ragdolls
below in the seal brown color, then with the Lynx stripes,
then in seal tortishell, then in blue. |
|
 |
 |
|
 |
 |
|
“Mitted” below has dark points and
the body color is a lighter complimenting shade to the point color.
White mittens on front paws, back legs and feet are all white, a
white chin that continues down the underside of the neck and
into a white belly stripe clear to the end of the underside of the
cat, and white neck ruff of fur. Mitted can also have a blaze
in between the eyes, and some have white on the tip of the tail.
Example of a mitted is below in red, in seal tortie lynx with a
blaze, in blue lynx, in seal, all are "Mitted". | |

|
 |
 |
| |
|
“Bicolor” below has dark points, face mask color is interrupted by an inverted
V shape of white color running between the eyes and expanding into the muzzle, legs are white to the hocks,
body color forms a “saddle”
shape of color that is a lighter complimenting shade to the point
color and this coloring can be broken in pattern, remainder of the
cat is white. Example of young Bicolors is below in seal brown
and in blue. | |
 |
 |
| |
|
"Van"
below
is mostly all white with the least
amount of color generally seen in the mask of the face or top of the
head, ears, and tail, with the rest of the cat being white. A spot or two of color
is allowed in the
body. The most preferred Van is one with a body that's entirely
white with no more than 20% color showing on the face, ears,
tail. Example of a young Van bicolor pattern is below in seal brown tortishell. |

HISTORY OF THE RAGDOLL
BREED
The
true accurate history of the Ragdoll Breed is on the
RFCI (Ragdoll Fanciers Club International) web site
http://www.rfci.org/history/ragdoll_history.php along
with photos of the creator, Ann Baker and some of her early
"Ragdolls".
The Ragdoll
breed is
not to be confused
with RagaMuffin breed,
created by breeding Ragdoll foundation stock that were
eliminated from matings once the
Ragdoll breed was developed. Some people continued to
breed those excluded foundation
cats that are not "Ragdoll", breeding them to several different
pedigreed and non-pedigreed breeds of cat in efforts to
develop the ragamuffin breed. The ragamuffin breed has it's own
breed Standard still being developed.
The Ragdoll is
not to be confused with Birman
breed,
a natural breed
who is also a
blue-eyed pointed breed, but smaller in size and weight than Ragdoll, and whose
pattern in always and only 4 white mittens with
white color as a runner/uneven line up the backside of the mittens and hind legs, and always
has a dark colored chin, a Roman type nose,
round shaped blue eyes. Birman come in only one pattern as
described, and it is all four mittens with a dark colored
chin. |
